First Word – Red Sky

I am fortunate to come from the Teme-Augama-Anishnaabe (People of the Deep Water) in Temagami, northern Ontario, and to welcome you to this second edition of eARTh emag about inspired art.

My own roots are a driving force as I am from Temagami. I grew up among 1600 islands with nature all around me. How I grew up has informed the vision of Red Sky Performance – all of our productions are tied to nature, nature being sentient and living.

I also write in my roles as Director of Indigenous Arts at The Banff Centre, and Founder and Artistic Director of Red Sky Performance, a world-renowned Canadian-based creation and touring company of contemporary world Indigenous performance in dance, theatre and music.

Red Sky has garnered an international reputation for collaborating on landmark projects with some of the most prestigious Indigenous artists and companies from around the globe for over 13 years. Our productions have been described as ‘ravishingly beautiful’ and ‘stunning’; the same could be said of our perception of earth as witnessed in ‘The Great Mountain’ production (2012) about the transformative power of nature, and the courage it takes to see the world with new eyes. The play focused on young people’s capacity to address pressing environmental issues and to recognize their own ability to make a difference to the future of the planet.

It also highlighted the enormity of courage and confidence required to move society’s mountain of mindsets. Red Sky’s productions continue to underscore the value of global collaborations and the enduring sentience of nature. Like eARTh emag and its readership, Red Sky recognizes that the natural world, indeed, has tremendous beauty and spirit at its core.
